Building back-to-school brushing habits

Summer break is over, and school is back in session. Now, it’s time for early mornings, bus rides, packed lunches and … a new dental hygiene routine?! That’s right. Now is the perfect time to start fresh with your child’s brushing and flossing routine. Start the school year off right with these 3 easy back-to-school brushing habits!

Use a timer or play their favorite song

It’s hard to make sure your child brushes their teeth for long enough. That’s why we recommend investing in a fun timer to help keep track of their brushing time. If you don’t want to spend money, try turning on their favorite song for two minutes as they brush their teeth!

Make sure they floss once a day

Some of us adults aren’t great at this one, but it’s important to start flossing young! Pick a time: morning or bedtime. Then, make flossing a part of your child’s daily routine. Make it a game and challenge your child to floss between every tooth all on their own. If you need to step in to help, that’s fine! Flossing is more difficult to teach than brushing.

Schedule regular check-ups

It’s important for kids to visit the dentist at least twice a year! The dentist will be able to spot any cavities, tooth decay or infection before it causes too much damage. They can also recommend orthodontics, and let you know how a child’s teeth are forming. Most importantly, visiting the dentist helps forge good habits for the future.
