5 sweet treats that won’t hurt your teeth

Sugar is notoriously bad for your teeth, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s delicious! Once you have a sweet craving, it can be super hard to satisfy it. Cookies and brownies and candy bars may taste good, but they also cause cavities. If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth without hurting your teeth, try one of these five alternatives.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and can help lower heart disease. However, it is important that you’re reaching for the right dark chocolate—70 to 90% cocoa content is the healthiest option to reach for. Also, be sure to check the label for any added sugar!

Sugar-free yogurt parfait

Sugar-free yogurt, specifically Greek yogurt, does wonders for your oral health! The calcium and phosphorous present in yogurt can help in repairing tooth enamel. Pair your yogurt with sliced strawberries and blueberries for an extra dose of tooth-healthy nutrients. Bonus: strawberries may also help your teeth appear brighter.

Fresh fruit

Fresh fruit that is high in fiber can work as a way of “flossing” your teeth. The chewing involved in eating fruits like apples or pears can help clean teeth and increase saliva production. However, not all fruits were made equal when it comes to oral health. Citrus fruits, such as oranges, limes and lemons should be consumed carefully as the acid breaks down gums and tooth enamel.

Chia pudding

Chia seeds are full of Omega 3’s, antioxidants, and fiber! Add 2 tablespoons of chia seeds to half a glass of milk or milk alternative. Place the cup in the fridge overnight. Add honey or sweetener if desired and top with fruit and granola for extra flavor.

Chocolate dipped bananas

Bananas contain vitamin D and calcium, which are both great nutrients for your teeth. Bananas are also a great fruit to feed small children, since they are easy to chew. If you’re looking to combine your chocolate and fruit cravings, this recipe is for you! First, make sure you buy healthy dark chocolate with low sugar content. Then, melt the chocolate and fully coat banana slices in the mixture. Place chocolate bananas in the freezer for at least two hours.
