Caring for your oral health while traveling

Whether you’re visiting relatives or going on a trip abroad, it’s likely you have some travel plans for this winter. Travel is great for relaxing, spending more time with loved ones, and having adventures—but it isn’t so great for oral health. Getting out of your normal routine can affect your oral hygiene routine, as you may be tempted to skip brushing your teeth or not pack the floss.

Here’s a few tips for ensuring you keep up with your oral health while traveling.

Pack all your dental essentials

Make sure you have a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and a travel case to keep it all organized. Also, don’t just throw your toothbrush into a bag. Keep it clean with a toothbrush container.

Try to stick to your normal routine

With time zone changes and hectic schedules, it can be hard to stick to a routine when traveling. Wherever you happen to be, make it a point to brush your teeth every morning and night—no matter how early or late it is!

Stay hydrated

It’s easy to get dehydrated when traveling. That’s why it’s important to have a water bottle with you at all times. Obviously, this benefits your overall health, but it’s also great for your smile! Staying hydrated helps prevent dry mouth which can lead to tooth decay and other oral health problems.

Avoid harmful foods

You should certainly indulge in some fun food while traveling but try to avoid consuming too many sticky or sugary treats. Instead opt for fun dishes featuring local fruits and vegetables, or calcium-rich protein like fish.

Don’t let all the memories you’re making while traveling be spoiled by cavities and dental problems! Save yourself some worry by sticking to a routine and having your next dental cleaning on the calendar.
