The most important vitamins for oral health

Vitamins and minerals are vital for everyday bodily functions and overall health. They’re also vital to maintain and strengthen your oral health. Each vitamin or mineral provides a unique benefit to your body, including the teeth and gums!

Here are a few of the most important vitamins and minerals for your teeth, and how you can include them in your diet.

Calcium

We all know about calcium, the bone-strengthening mineral. But in reality, it is a deficiency in calcium that can most impact our teeth. When the body senses a lack of calcium, it begins extracting the mineral from our bones and teeth! This increases the risk of tooth decay and cavities.

To get your daily dose of calcium, reach for dairy, soy or fish products. Dark leafy vegetables like cooked kale or spinach are also great sources of calcium.

Vitamin D

This vitamin is similar to calcium, in that a deficiency affects your teeth the most. Vitamin D plays an important role in tooth mineralization, by absorbing and maintaining calcium. If you are deficient in Vitamin D, the calcium content in your teeth will most likely be affected, as well.

Salmon is one of the best ways to get a strong dose of Vitamin D. Egg yolks, mushrooms and other fish products are other great options for getting this important vitamin.

Vitamin A

This vitamin is important for tooth enamel and gum health. It helps keep salvia flowing, one of the best tools for naturally cleaning teeth and preventing dry mouth. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, mangoes and eggs are all great sources of Vitamin A. Liver and fish both have high concentrations of Vitamin A, as well.

Phosphorous

This is another key mineral for helping your body absorb calcium. Phosphorous strengthens teeth by helping protect and rebuild tooth enamel. Incorporate phosphorus into your diet by reaching for lentils, nuts, beans and dairy products.

Consuming the right vitamins and minerals is not enough to keep your teeth healthy! It’s also important to visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups.
