Help your kids form good dental habits

As a parent, it can be difficult to get your child to brush and floss their teeth. It can be even more difficult to get them to their dentist’s appointment without complaining. For their development and overall health, it’s important to instill good dental hygiene habits young.

Here are some ways to make caring for your child’s teeth fun!

Let them brush their own teeth

Even if they’re younger than 6 years old, it’s important to give them a chance to try brushing their teeth on their own. You can watch them and make sure they’re brushing for long enough and give them tips to improve. Avoid allowing them to become dependent on a parent brushing their teeth for them.

Lead by example

Demonstrate healthy habits by practicing them yourself! Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Just by observing you and your daily habits, children can pick up on a lot.

Make tooth brushing fun

Never underestimate the power of music, even with helping children learn to brush their teeth. Try to choose a song that’s at least two minutes long to encourage a healthy brushing routine. You can also practice the correct way to brush beforehand by drawing a set of teeth on paper and demonstrating how to hold and move the brush. Be sure to brush using small circles at an angle!

Encourage dentist visits

Make dentist visits exciting by going to a park or museum afterwards. This can help associate dentist visits with other fun family activities. Your child may start looking forward to their dentist appointments!
